Introduction

GroceryChop ("we", "us", "our", or "Company") operates the GroceryChop website and mobile application. This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal data when you use our Service and the choices you have associated with that data.

Information Collection and Use

We collect several different types of information for various purposes to provide and improve our Service:

Account Information: Name, email address, and account preferences when you create an account.
Usage Data: How you interact with our platform, pages visited, time spent, features used, search queries, products compared, deals viewed, and store selections.
Location Data: Your general location (typically a ZIP code you provide or a coarse location derived from your IP address) to show nearby stores and relevant deals.
Search and Comparison History: Products you search for, prices you compare, and items you add to grocery lists.
Device Information: Device type, operating system, and browser information.
Anonymous Identifiers: A randomly generated identifier (stored in a cookie calledgc_anon_id) is set on your first visit and retained for approximately 13 months. This identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any other personally identifying information.

GroceryChop uses the collected data for various purposes:

Anonymized and Aggregated Data

In addition to the personal data described above, we collect, aggregate, and anonymize information about how users interact with our Service in a way that does not identify any individual person. This includes anonymous cookie identifiers, search queries, ZIP code prefixes, product views, price comparisons, store selections, deal interactions, and other engagement events.

We may use, share, sell, or license this anonymized and aggregated data to third parties — including grocery retailers, consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands, market research firms, financial analysts, academic researchers, and journalists — for purposes including but not limited to:

Market research and consumer trend analysis
Competitive pricing intelligence and benchmarking
Retail assortment and category management
Demand forecasting and economic analysis
Reporting, journalism, and academic publication

Before sharing data with any third party, we apply industry-standard anonymization techniques including, but not limited to:

Removing or hashing personal identifiers (name, email, account ID)
Truncating ZIP codes to 3-digit prefixes (covering approximately 30-mile geographic areas) when publishing or selling geographic insights
Suppressing data points where small sample sizes could enable re-identification (a practice known as k-anonymity)
Stripping any free-text fields that could contain identifying information

We do not sell data that personally identifies you (such as your name, email address, account credentials, or full address) without your explicit consent. The anonymized aggregations described in this section cannot reasonably be used to identify you as an individual.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use cookies and similar tracking technologies to operate and improve our Service. The cookies we use include:

Authentication cookies — set by Supabase to keep you signed in across visits.
Analytics cookies — set by Google Analytics to measure aggregate traffic and feature usage. These are subject to Google's privacy policy.
Anonymous identifier cookies (gc_anon_id) — a randomly generated identifier set on your first visit and retained for approximately 13 months. This cookie does not contain personal information and exists solely to allow us to distinguish anonymous users for analytics, aggregation, and return-visit measurement.
Functional cookies — used to remember preferences such as your selected ZIP code, store filters, or shopping list contents.

You can instruct your browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. Note that some features of the Service may not function correctly if cookies are disabled.

Third-Party Services

We use third-party services to help operate and improve the Service. Each of these services may collect information sent by your device. Their use of that information is governed by their respective privacy policies:

Google Analytics — provides traffic and engagement analytics. See Google's privacy policy.
Supabase — provides authentication and account database hosting.
Brevo — handles email delivery for newsletters and transactional messages.
Retailer APIs — we query publicly available retailer pricing APIs to display product prices. We do not share user-identifying information with these retailers.

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have specific rights regarding the personal data we hold about you, including:

Access: You may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Correction: You may request that inaccurate personal data be corrected.
Deletion: You may request that your personal data be deleted, subject to legal retention requirements.
Opt-Out of Sale (California residents): California's Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives California residents the right to opt out of the sale of their personal information. As described above, we sell only anonymized, aggregated data and do not sell personally identifiable data. If you would still like to opt out of having your usage data included in any anonymized aggregations we may sell, contact us at sw@grocerychop.com. We are working on a self-service opt-out tool and will publish a direct opt-out URL when it becomes available.
EU/UK residents: If you are accessing the Service from the European Union or the United Kingdom, you may have additional rights under GDPR, including the right to data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

Children's Privacy

Our Service is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and you believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at sw@grocerychop.com and we will take steps to remove that information from our records.

Data Retention

We retain personal data only as long as necessary to provide the Service and fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required by law. Anonymized and aggregated data, which cannot reasonably be used to identify you, may be retained indefinitely for research and analytics purposes.

Security of Data

The security of your data is important to us, but remember that no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal data, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date at the top. For significant changes, we may also notify registered users by email. Your continued use of the Service after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
